I Remember You

In I Remember You, I delve into the essence of my mother, capturing a moment frozen in the 80s, likely 1987. The portrait portrays her at 18, invited to a pre-club gathering hosted by a stranger in his hotel room. Capturing her timid smile and diverted gaze, the photograph encapsulates her playful energy and youthful vibrancy; qualities I still see in her today. Rummaging through photos of her past, I’m reminded of moments in her life that weren’t always as radiant as they seemed. With this in mind, I sought to depict a slice of history tethered to her charismatic spirit, separate from her traumas and struggles; I embraced the nostalgia and dreaminess of her memory as if it were my own. Through soft, blended brushstrokes, I weave a narrative that transcends time, merging her past with my present. Within her smile and mannerisms, I glimpse reflections of myself and my sister, rendering the continuum of familial traits and characteristics. A nostalgic colour palette of pastel purples, blues, and pinks envelops the canvas, mirroring the hues of her eyeshadow and the backdrop of her era. I Remember You becomes a homage to my mother's resilience and serves as a tribute to her ability to overcome the adversities no woman should endure. Grateful for her guidance and strength, I celebrate the privilege of being nurtured by a woman of such unwavering courage and perseverance. She embodies the strength and hope I seek within myself.
